What is Risperdal?
Risperdal (generic: risperidone) is a widely-prescribed atypical antipsychotic drug made by Ortho-McNeill-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. It is used to treat a variety of severe psychological conditions including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, attention deficit disorder, autism, depression and anxiety in children. Risperdal was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993.
Risperdal and Tardive Dyskinesia
Although most Risperdal Lawsuits involve gynecomastia, this drug has also been reported to cause an irreversible movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia. Signs and symptoms of this condition may include:
- repetitive, involuntary movements of their arms and legs
- lip smacking
- mouth and lip movements
- rapid blinking
- diminished movement of their fingers
There is currently no known treatment or cure for Risperdal-induced tardive dyskinesia. While quitting Risperdal may relieve some symptoms, others may actually worsen when the drug is discontinued. The victims of Risperdal are left asking how manufacturers could have failed to adequately investigate the drug, to inform the public of the risks associated with its use, and to provide warnings regarding its serious side effects.
2013 Risperdal Settlement
In November 2013, J&J agreed to resolve criminal and civil investigations into the marketing of Risperdal and other drugs by paying more than $2.2 billion, one of the largest penalties ever levied against a company for healthcare fraud. According to the terms of the agreement, J&J’s Janssen division will plead guilty to misbranding Risperdal for unapproved uses, as well as for paying kickbacks to physicians and to Omnicare Inc., the largest pharmacy for nursing homes.
